Chapter 9

“Rory.” A male voice called to me softly.

My eyelids fluttered open. The light from a fire jumped and flickered as it cast dancing shadows on nearby walls. Rounded concrete walls. This looked to be some sort of tunnel.

“Ah, you are with us, Rory.” The soft male voice whispered. Then he spoke more loudly to someone else nearby. “She’s awake. Awakity wakity wake.”

“Chester?” My voice cracked within my dry throat. I blinked a few times to clear my eyes. Chester knelt down next to me and smiled.

“Yes, Sunshine?”

I pulled in a long breath. I had so many questions that I didn’t even know where to begin. My mind felt really fuzzy. I vaguely remember being pulled out of the water. I think someone wrapped me in a blanket and carried me. I shook my head slightly, trying to clear the cobwebs to remember what happened.

“Diego,” I said. There was no question in my voice, just a palpable sadness.

“I’m fine, Aurora.” Diego’s voice came from behind me, along with his quickly approaching footsteps, the sound of combat boots echoing off concrete walls.

“Diego!” My heart jumped at the sound of his voice, and I tried to pull myself up quickly into a sitting position. Chester grabbed onto my elbow to steady me.

I turned my head to look back at Diego. He wore a tattered black New Government uniform. He looked like he had scratches and scrapes on his body, but otherwise he seemed to be in good shape. He made his way to me quickly, knelt down, and put his arms around me. I buried my head into his chest. I didn’t even care that he smelled like smoke and diesel fuel.

The tears started in again. So much emotion. I just couldn’t believe he was alive. I thought he was gone. I thought he must have died when the helicopter exploded. I thought I was alone.

Another set of footsteps moving quickly across the stone and dirt floor. I pulled my head back from Diego’s chest to see who else was with us in this hideout.

“Dani!” I cried out.

I scrambled to my feet just as she reached me, and I pulled her into a big embrace. I had a feeling she was okay, and Chester told me they were going to rescue her too. Yet I felt so overwhelmed with emotion that all I could do was just nod as she whispered into my ear that she was so happy to see me.

Finally I pulled back from her, put my hands on her shoulders, and held her at arm’s length to really look at her. She looked thinner and a bit pale. She smiled at me through dry, cracked lips.

I hated to ask, but I had to know. “They didn’t hurt you, did they?” I bit my lip, afraid of the answer.

Dani’s eyes cast down. I followed her downward glance to the bandaged stump at the end of her wrist. I gently raised her arm closer to my face to inspect it.

“They took your hand?” I asked.
